How to Change Your Personal Information at a Arizona DMV

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Changing your personal information at an Arizona MVD is one of the quickest and easiest ways to update your AZ driving records. Given you have personal documents ready and a bit of free time, you shouldn’t run into any snags when updating your name or changing your address.

Below, you’ll learn the steps, requirements, and fees for doing both of these actions.

How to Update Your Name

You will update your information with the Social Security Administration before changing your name at the Arizona MVD. This process is available in-person or by mail.

To change your name with Social Security Admin:

  1. File an Application for a Social Security Card (SS-5)
  2. Show proof of:
    1. Name change
    2. S. presence
    3. Identification/age

You should receive your new social security card in about 2 weeks. With this in hand, you should visit your local AZ MVD or third-party office within 10 days to update your name on file.

To change your name at the Arizona DMV:

  1. Show proof of name change*:
    1. Marriage cert or license
    2. Divorce Decree
    3. Court order
    4. Citizenship/naturalization cert
  2. Pay the name change fees
    1. License or ID: $12 or free if 65yo+
    2. Title: $4
    3. Registration: $4

*These items must be the originals

The DMV will confirm your name change by contacting the Social Security Administration (SSA). If your information cannot be verified, you will not receive an updated license or ID.

You can use this time to get a new driver’s license with your updated name. To do this, you can apply for a duplicate driver’s license while you’re at the DMV with the information in hand. Likewise, consider updating your vehicle registration by filing a Title and Registration Application while you’re there.
