How to Get a Driver’s License in Georgia?

Georgia Drivers License Guide
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Georgia, like other states, uses a graduated driver licensing (GDL) program starting at 15. Teens begin their driver’s certification with a learner’s permit followed by an intermediate license.

Teens apply for their unrestricted license after showing driving responsibility and behind-the-wheel experience. Teens get a GA license 12 months after receiving a provisional license. Or if the teen turns 18 years old and is willing to pass similar DMV tests.

Here’s how you’ll get an adult license assuming you kept a clean record, completed the prior stages of the GDL program, and have a valid intermediate license.

Get an Unrestricted GA License

A Georgia license is available for those having “graduated” the GDL program at age 17. The GA DMV requires everyone to pass a driver’s education course when going through the GDL program. Plus, show behind-the-wheel experience, be enrolled in school, and take the Alcohol and Drug Awareness course.

Those 18 and older can skip getting their full driver’s license without these requirements.

What you’ll do:

  1. Schedule and visit a GA DMV near you
  2. Provide personal identification1
  3. Provide proof of residency2
  4. Provide a valid provisional license (if doing the GDL program)
  5. Pass the written test
    1. Need help? Try an online practice test
  6. Pass the vision screening
  7. Pass the road test
  8. Pay the $32 application fee

Note: By now, you should have auto insurance covering the state’s minimum. If you do not, consider adding auto insurance coverage as soon as you can – or when registering your vehicle.

Proof of Identification1 includes:

  • Passport
  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • W-2 or 1099

Proof of residency2 includes:

  • Mortgage statement
  • Utility bill
  • Current deed
  • Medical/health card

The DMV driving test verifies adult drivers can show respect for the road. This includes checking for safety, controlling the vehicle, and obeying traffic signs. The test also checks if you can signal properly and observe/communicate your driving abilities.

Congratulations!

You’re now a new, proud owner of an unrestricted license good for eight years until you’re ready to renew a Georgia license. Also, you must retake these steps when reinvoking a suspended license (it’s always good to know — just in case).

Be safe on those roads!
