How to Do A Name Change at the Idaho DMV?
Moving to a new place tends to include a bit of paperwork. This can include updating your residency with the DMV so it reflects on a new ID or license. Likewise, you may need to update your information because you’re doing a name change.
Changing your information isn’t difficult if you follow this guide. In it, we share the general process of updating your personal information with the SSA (for name changes) and Idaho DMV offices (for address changes).

How to Change Your Legal Name?
If you want to change your name legally, you must go through a formal process, which involves updating your records with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA maintains records of individuals’ Social Security numbers (SSNs) used as identifiers for tax and social security purposes.
You will need to provide evidence of your name change to change your name with the SSA. Once you have collected the appropriate documents, you can submit them to the SSA. The SSA will process your application and update its records accordingly. After this, your new name will be associated with your SSN, and you will be able to use your new name for legal purposes.
Note: Changing your name with the SSA does not automatically change your name on other documents, such as your driver’s license or passport.

You can do all this by going to an SSA office or mailing the forms and documents to them. If you have any questions, you can call the SSA for help.
After your name change is complete with the SSA, you need to update your driver’s license to reflect your new name. To do this, go to a local DMV office, provide them with your new name documents and social security number, and pay a fee. This process is the same as getting an ID, but with updated information.

Changing Your Address in Idaho (Updating the DMV)
When someone moves to a new state, updating their information with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within a specific timeframe is essential. In most cases, the DMV requires new residents to update their information within 30 days of moving to the state.
Typically – items needed if you’re changing an address after moving to the state include:
- Current out-of-state driver’s license
- Proof of social security number (ie. social security card)
- Birth certificate (or other document showing legal US presence)
- A document (or two) showing your new address
In addition to providing the required documentation, the new resident will also need to pay any appropriate fees. These fees may include a fee for a new driver’s license or identification card, as well as any fees associated with registering a vehicle in the new state.
This is the prime time to register an out-of-state vehicle in Idaho.
Now, for Idaho residents updating their address – you’ve got some options.
Grab a copy of the Idaho Change of Address Request form and fill it out.
Then – you can:
- Gather up your documents (primary ID or license, social security card, and proof of Idaho residency), then visit your local DMV office.
- Send your documents to the Driver Services Idaho Transportation Department.
- Fax or email the completed form to the DMV
You can get a new license issued with this updated information, though it’s unnecessary. However, you’ll want to update your vehicle registration so it has your new place of residency.
