Has something happened to your vehicle’s title? Did it become lost, damaged, or stolen? If so, you’ll want to complete the Minnesota duplicate title process!

There’s no telling what can happen to your title during ownership.

You’ll want to get the title in order if you ever plan to transfer ownership. This is your legal document showing you have ownership of the vehicle. Without it, you can’t sell it, donate it, or complete your vehicle registration or renewals – so make sure it’s safe!

How to Replace or Get a Duplicate Minnesota Title?

You can replace your title in-person at a local Minnesota Division of Motor Vehicles office/location. Or, process the same paperwork and submit it by mail.

You’ll need to file the Application for Duplicate Title, Registration, Cab or Lien Card (PS2067A).

Then, meet these requirements:

  • Be either the vehicle owner, legal owner, representative
  • Have a signed Power of Attorney

You will pay a $7.25 title fee and a $10 filing fee when you file this document to get your duplicate Minnesota vehicle title.

Other items you may need:

  • Driver’s license or ID card
  • License plate number
  • Vehicle’s VIN, make, model, and year
  • Vehicle’s registration proof of ownership
  • Any lien details and power of attorney (if applicable)

While these items aren’t entirely necessary, you may want to have them on hand in case you need to process other items at the DMV. These documents also prove handy if you’re making corrections.

Replacing/Duplicates In-Person

Replacing a title in person requires you to:

  1. Locate your local MN DMV
  2. Show proof of ID
  3. Show proof of vehicle ownership
  4. Submit your form
  5. Pay the application and filing fee

Your Minnesota title replacement request is processed on location though it may take until the following day to get it. Make sure your license information is correct so they don’t accidentally send your forms to a different address!

Replacing/Duplicates by Mail

Rather not go to the DMV and, instead, do the process by mail?

You will:

  • Complete the paperwork (listed above)
  • Include the damaged title (if replaced)
  • Include a check or money order for fees

These documents go to:

Driver and Vehicle Services

Town Square Building

445 Minnesota St, Suite 187

St Paul, MN 55101

Your new title should arrive by mail in about a week or two. Again, make sure they have the right information on file when you’re submitting this information.

You’re Done!

The title replacement process doesn’t take long (as you can see). You don’t want to delay this as you never know when you may need to show your title. Try to get your duplicate as soon as possible to avoid any issues – and so you can keep showing vehicle ownership.
