Changing your personal information at a North Carolina DMV is one of the quickest and easiest ways to update your NC driving records. Given you have confidential documents ready and a bit of free time, you shouldn’t run into any snags when updating your name or changing your address.

Below, you’ll learn the steps, requirements, and fees for doing these actions.

How to Update Your Name at The North Carolina DMV?

You will update your information with the Social Security Administration before changing your name at the North Carolina DMV. This process is available in-person or by mail.

You will:

  1. File an Application for a Social Security Card (SS-5)
  2. Show proof of:
    1. Name change
    2. S. presence
    3. Identification

The identification documents must be originals or certified copies. Bring these documents and form to your local Social Security office. Or, mail them.

You should receive your new social security card in about two weeks. With this in hand, you should visit your local NC DMV or third-party office as soon as you can to update your information.

You should report your name change within 60 days to the North Carolina DMV.

To change your name at a North Carolina DMV office, you will:

  1. Provide proof of identification
    1. NC driver’s license
    2. NC ID card

    1. Marriage cert or license
    2. Divorce Decree

The DMV will confirm your name change by contacting the Social Security Administration (SSA). You will not receive an updated license or ID if your information cannot be verified.

Important: Update Your Title and Registration

Changing your name at the DMV office does not update your vehicle records. You must update your title and registration within 60 days of changing your name.

Go to the DMV and:

  1. Show your updated NC driver’s license
  2. Show proof of name change
  3. Submit the original vehicle title
  4. Complete and file the Corrected or Substituted Title Application (MVR-5) and odometer inspection if your vehicle is ten years or older, plus the lien release if applicable
  5. Pay the $20 titling and registration fee

Else, mail your documents to:

N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles

3148 Mail Service Center

Raleigh, NC 27697

Your title and registration documents will arrive by mail soon after their processing.
