Registering a Motorcycle or Boat in New Mexico

Registration Only – Motorboats

A Motorboat with a Length of Less than Ten Feet Is Not a “Boat”

“A motorboat that is less than ten feet long must be registered, but it does not fulfill the statutory definition of a boat,” which means it is not required to be titled.

If the applicant wishes to title a boat that is less than ten feet long, he is free to do so. He should, however, be informed that:

On registered-but-not-titled motorboats, there is no requirement to title, and if they do choose to title the vessel, all expenses and excise taxes will be charged. Liens on unregistered boats are enforceable in only a few states.

Although motorboats and Jetskis with a length of less than ten feet must be registered but not titled, they are nevertheless required to have a registration number. MVD is unable to perfect a lien without issuing a title. A person having an encumbrance on a vehicle or vessel that has not been titled should be directed to the Secretary of State’s office at (505) 827-3600 for action under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC).
