The North Department of Transportation (NDDOT) oversees your vehicle’s registration renewal.

You will receive a renewal notice before your vehicle’s expiration or through email if you signed up for the service. You have up to 3 months before your expiration period to get the vehicle renewed. There is no grace period if your registration expires.

The notice/email shares a registration invoice number you’ll use with their systems. Otherwise, you can use your title number and/or plate number on your current registration forms.

In-Person Registration Renewal

Do the following if you want to handle the renewal in person:

Visit an ND DMV
Provide your ND driver’s license
Show your signed registration notice or vehicle information
Pay your renewal fees

Congratulations! You’ll receive your new card and plate stickers once everything is processed.

Online Registration Renewal

The online system provides the easiest way to get your vehicle good for the road:

Visit the NDDOT site
Follow the on-screen prompts
Fill in your information:
1. Invoice number
2. Or: Title/license number
Pay your fees
Print your receipt

You should receive your stickers and documents by mail in about a week. Call your local DMV or check online if it’s taking longer than expected.

Mail-in Registration Renewal

The mail-in renewal process is the same as doing it in person. Except, you’ll verify your information, sign the notice, and send it to the address listed on the mailer (or your local DMV). You’ll include payment for your renewal fees along with the documents.

Kiosk Registration Renewal

North Dakota has several self-service vehicle kiosks for renewing your tabs. These are available in areas like Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, Dickinson, Minot, and Williston. Expect to pay an extra $3 service fee and credit card processing fees.
