How to Transfer a Vehicle Title in Oklahoma
A title transfer is required in Oklahoma to prove ownership if you bought a new or used car. The title transfer is required if you sold, donated, or gifted your car, too.
You will visit an Oklahoma Tax Commission’s Motor Vehicle Division office in this process.
The transfer is easy requiring a few steps filing info, paying fees, and submitting paperwork. Below, you’ll learn how to complete a private sale title transfer and the alternatives.
Oklahoma Auto Title Transfers: How It’s Done
Selling your vehicle or buying one through a private sale?
Your best bet is having both parties go to the local clerk’s office to avoid any potential issues. The process is largely the same between seller and buyer with a few exceptions – below, you’ll find a general overview of the process.
Note: You will need the title notarized before/during submission.
This is the process (including both parties):
- Retrieve the vehicle’s title or request a duplicate title
- Note: You may need a lien release from the current owner
- Or: Provide a lien release to the buyer (if you’re the owner)
- Fill the title transfer section on the Oklahoma certificate of title – including:
- Full legal name and address of buyer and owner
- Date of sale (month, day, and year)
- Odometer reading (if applicable)
- Emissions certificate (if applicable)
- Complete the Application for Oklahoma Certificate of Title for a Vehicle (Form 701-6)
- Owner/applicant information
- Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (if applicable)
- Odometer declaration (if applicable)
- Application signatures
- Notarize the application
- Bring the necessary, personal documents:
- Proof of identification
- Proof of insurance
- Documents stating any liens have been paid
- Bill of sale or Declaration of Vehicle Purchase Price
- Statement of lien satisfaction
- Pay the taxes and fees
- Transfer: $17
- With Lien: $10 extra (in-state) or $13 extra (out of state)
* The title transfer may happen when receiving a duplicate title.
Always keep copies of the bill of sale for record-keeping. Congratulations, you’ve completed the Oklahoma title transfer application and switched ownership of the vehicle!
Alternative Title Transfers in Oklahoma
Oklahoma wants to know when titles are transferred outside of private sales whether buying from a car lot or passing the vehicle & title around family and friends.
Buying from Dealerships
Dealerships will process your title & registration, sending documents to their appropriate locations. If they don’t, request the forms and deliver them to an OK DMV. They will complete the title application form and do the process as noted in the section above.
You may also need to submit the MCO, bill of sale, and/or the Declaration of Vehicle Purchase Price.
Out-of-State Vehicles
Bringing a vehicle from another state requires you to register it with the OK DMV (as expected). This process involves an applicable emissions test. You will submit your current title, VIN inspection, and 735-226 form when applying. Pay the fees and you’re good to go else you may mail your information, too.
Inheriting a Vehicle
Inheriting a vehicle from a deceased family member involves much of the same process as private auto title transfers. Except, you will also file a Family Affidavit (Form 794) to complete the transfer. You will also need to provide proof of the original owner’s passing such as with a death certificate.
In some instances, you’ll need to file a Small Estate Affidavit (Form 405) if the estate is valued under $50,000 at the time of its transfer.
Gifted/Donated Vehicles
You will complete the process much like transferring a title through private sales. Except, you’ll typically be eligible for a tax credit because it’s gifted/donated.
