Alternative Title Transfers in Nevada
Nevada wants to know when titles are transferred outside of private sales, whether buying from a car lot or passing the vehicle & title around family and friends.
Buying from Dealerships
Dealerships will process your title & registration, sending documents to their appropriate locations. If they don’t, request the forms and deliver them to an NV DMV. They will complete the title application form and do the process as noted in the section above.
Out-of-State Vehicles
Bringing a vehicle from another state requires you to get an inspection if you’re around the central or metro Reno/Las Vegas areas. You’ll also need to get a VIN inspection. Afterward, you’ll submit your title, registration, ID, certificates, and the VP-222 form at the DMV.
You should also get Nevada auto insurance before you decide to get on state roads.
Pay your registration and titling fees and you’re good to go!
Inheriting a Vehicle
Inheriting a vehicle from a deceased family member is wholly dependent on the situation. However, you’ll typically go to the DMV and submit the title, Transfer of Death Application (VP-239) if transferring or VP-241 if receiving and no title, and pay the titling fee to complete the process.
You may also mail these documents and payment to the Department of Motor Vehicles, Title Processing, 555 Wright Way, Carson City, NV 89771.
Gifted/Donated Vehicles
You will complete the process much like transferring a title through private sales. Except, you’ll typically be eligible for a tax credit because it’s gifted/donated. Work with your chosen non-profit to find the best way to donate your vehicle in Nevada.
